the front door’s
an open yawn,
a trickle of possessions
spill out over the lawn:
like planted, silk roses
petals sun-bleached and pale
they packed the pickup
up with just essentials,
left the TV by the swale
and the family was gone
the family was gone
before the eviction notice noted
as it fluttered on a porch post
before the police escort showed up
landlord on a cell phone
the TV’s cord had been scavenged
for the copper inside
left peeled back black plastic
like an animal’s hide
the family was gone

Hoarders
03:21
|
|||
fragments of days
a life worth of remnants
and shards of mistakes
debris from the moments
you can’t stand to re-play
they glint something blinding
but you can’t look away
closed eyes in repose
succumb to the threads
interwove round your throat
spun from the static
of doubt and reproach
oh to pull at the knot
just to loosen the rope
to the window
let the drapery sing
of more agreeable things
a folded note that she’d left
a faux diamond ring
the trinkets seem to collect
at the corners and seams
things you can’t bring yourself
to throw out so you keep
in the drawer of a desk
crumpled up in a ball
a flag she wore as a dress
to a dance, she used to
hang up on her wall
let’s let that banner unfurl
and not fly these flags anymore
